What is Safe Place?
Safe Place is an
innovative outreach program designed to assist youth and families in
crisis situations. The program began in Louisville, Kentucky in 1983 as
an outreach effort of the YMCA shelter for youth. Its success has
prompted the implementation of Safe Place in over 300 communities
nationwide. Bartow is the fifth community in Georgia to join the Safe
Place ranks.
The program works very
simply by creating a network of "Safe Places" - businesses and public
locations that display the Safe Place sign on their premises. Any
youth in trouble can go to a location bearing this sign and request
help. A trained employee will provide the youth with a secure place to
wait until our Flowering Branch shelter is contacted. The Shelter
then will send a trained volunteer to the Safe Place site to offer
assistance and to provide transportation to the best place possible.
This program provides a safe and organized way of reaching kids who are
caught in a crisis situation.
Talk with your family about what teens should do when they don't feel safe!
