Not every child begins the school year with the same opportunities.

Some students arrive carrying burdens far heavier than a backpack. Family challenges, financial hardship, housing instability, and major life changes can make it difficult to focus, stay engaged, and believe in their own potential.

When those challenges go unseen, students can begin to fall behind. But when someone steps in with encouragement, guidance, and support, hope takes root and futures change.

Hundreds of children and youth across Northwest Georgia will begin this school year needing that support. Some need a backpack filled with supplies. Others need the confidence that comes from knowing someone believes in them.

Marcus was not walking into the school year with confidence, was walking in after a decision that could have changed everything.

A move to a new school district left him overwhelmed. New faces, new expectations, nothing felt familiar. Instead of asking for help, Marcus began skipping school. He ignored his mom’s attempts to get him out the door. His grades slipped. What started as avoidance quickly placed him on a path toward delinquency.

Before that moment could define what came next, someone stepped in.

Through Advocates for Children, Marcus was connected with a Youth Accountability mentor who helped him take responsibility and find a better way forward. What he received was not punishment that pushed him away, but steady guidance that drew him back in. He met with people who saw beyond his mistake and believed in who he could become.

That changed how he showed up.

Over the course of 90 days, Marcus made a complete turnaround. He stopped skipping school. He started showing up, even on the days that felt hard. His grades began to recover. The same halls that once felt overwhelming became a place where he could find his footing. Assignments were no longer something to avoid. Conversations with teachers became opportunities instead of obstacles.

For the first time in a long time, Marcus could see a future that felt steady.

Today, Marcus is back in school and back on track. Not because the past disappeared, but because he was given the support to grow beyond it. This is what accountability looks like when it is paired with care. It keeps a single choice from becoming a lifelong path and gives a young person the space to choose a better way forward.

Every backpack says, “You belong.”

Every gift says, “Your community is with you.”
