November is Youth Homelessness Outreach, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) Month

A public awareness campaign that shines a light on youth homelessness, educates the public about the role they can play in preventing and ending youth homelessness, and increases visibility of the critical services offered to youth nationwide.

Every November, communities across the country recognize Youth Homelessness Outreach, Prevention, and Education (Youth HOPE) Month, a movement dedicated to raising awareness for the more than 4 million young people who experience homelessness each year. Many of these youth are quietly navigating crises, moving from couch to couch, leaving unsafe homes, or struggling to stay in school while their stability slips away. Youth HOPE Month brings their stories into the light and reminds us that preventing youth homelessness begins with awareness, compassion, and early support.

At Advocates for Children, we provide a continuum of programs designed to meet youth wherever they are in their journey. The Youth Independent Housing program supports young adults ages 18 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness by helping them secure safe apartments, build daily living skills, and create a path toward long-term stability. This year, Advocates has supported 163 young adults in Youth Independent Housing and managed 54 community-based apartments, giving young people the foundation they need to move forward. Younger youth find immediate safety at Newman House, our 24-hour shelter for ages 7 to 17, which offers emergency care, meals, clothing, crisis intervention, and family support. Older teens ages 16 to 21 can also enter our transitional living program, receiving up to 18 months of housing paired with guidance in education, employment, and life skills.

Advocates also leads the region’s Safe Place network, providing easily recognized locations across Northwest Georgia where youth can ask for help without fear or judgment. When a young person enters a Safe Place site, our team responds quickly and ensures they reach a secure, supportive environment. As Youth HOPE Month unfolds, we invite the community to stand with the young people behind the statistics. Together we can prevent youth homelessness, strengthen the safety net around vulnerable youth, and ensure that every young person in crisis is met with stability, dignity, and hope.

Living Her Dream:

Danielle’s Journey Comes Full Circle

Every young person deserves a place to call home and the chance to dream beyond survival. This November, during Youth HOPE Month, Advocates for Children is shining a light on the thousands of young people in Georgia who face homelessness each year. For us, this month is not just about awareness. It is about stories like Danielle’s, stories that remind us that hope can rewrite a life story.

As the oldest of twelve children, Danielle carried adult responsibilities long before she was raised. When her family connected with Advocates through the Family Resource Center, she found stability and guidance. Her turning point came through Youth Independent Housing (YIH), a program that provides safe housing, case management, and life skills support for young adults aged 18 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness. With the stability of her own apartment and the mentorship of caring advocates, Danielle secured employment, bought her first car, and began building the foundation for her future.

Today, Danielle works as a Case Manager for Advocates for Children, helping youth navigate the same program that once changed her life. “Being on the other side of where I was feels amazing,” she shared. “The same resources that helped me get here are now the ones I get to pass along.” Thanks to programs like YIH, where 96 percent of clients are housed within 60 days and 84 percent of graduates maintain housing in their own name after 90 days, young people like Danielle are proving that with stability, guidance, and community, anything is possible.

You can help more youth write their own success stories.
