CASA Training Starts August 28th!

CASA is an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocates.  CASA volunteers are everyday folks from our community who care about children and want to help the court learn everything it can about a child or sibling group.  The children we work with are in foster care.  CASAs talk with everyone who knows anything about the child and give a written report to the court regarding their findings.  A CASA may talk with a day care provider, teacher, doctors, relatives, and neighbors – anyone who can give information.  A CASA volunteer visits with the child/children at a minimum of once per month, but usually more often, especially in the beginning of the case.  The CASA makes written recommendations to the court and shares with the court what the child wants to happen in their life.

To be a CASA volunteer, one must be over 21 years old, have good transportation, and complete 40 hours of training – some online, some in the classroom and some in court observation.  We also do a complete background check including fingerprinting, criminal history and DFCS record searches.  After training is completed, there is usually much less court time needed, plus our staff attends court with you – so if you can’t be there, we will attend for you.  There is also 12 hours of in-service training each year.  We offer many opportunities for our volunteers to get those hours.  The training is the biggest concentration of time that needs to be spent.  We try diligently to match your case to your time availability once you have completed training and are sworn-in by the Judge.
